Rev Newet Vick

Birth: Mar. 17, 1766
Virginia, USA
Death: Aug. 5, 1819
Warren County
Mississippi, USA

My 4th Great Grandfather

In 1814, Rev. Newet (aka Newitt) Vick, a Virginia-born preacher, and Foster Cook (Mrs. Vick's nephew) erected a log cabin for worship near Vick's plantation, "Open Woods." Vick was the first local Methodist preacher in Warren County and, before his death in 1819 from Yellow Fever, he purchased 612 acres which he laid into town lots, the birth of the historic city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. (provided by Michael Logue)

Newet and Elizabeth had 13 children: Hartwell, Sarah Clark, Ann, Mary Tirzah, Martha, Eliza White, Lucy Watkins, John Wesley, General William, Matilda Louisa, Amanda Maria, Emily Franklin, Newit Holmes Vick.

There are different spellings of his name used on various documents. The one on his headstone is more than likely the correct way, so that is how I refer to him

*Calculated relationship
"Sacred in the memory of Newet Vick, a native of Virginia, born March 17th, 1766, and departed this life August 5th, 1819."

Joint for above (meaning Newet and wife)
"In life they were united
In death not divided.
Jesus smiles and says, "Well done.
Good and faithful servant, Yes, Enter
and receive thy crown. Reign with me
triumphantly." "
