John Conder
Birth: Jun. 3, 1714
South Cambridgeshire District
Cambridgeshire, England
Death: May 30, 1781
London Borough of Hackney
Greater London, England

Nonconformist minister and hymn writer. He was born into a strongly Nonconformist family at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire, and preached his first sermon as an Independent (Nonconformist) in 1738. He had a successful ministry in Cambridge until 1754, when he moved close to London to become President of the Independent College, Homerton, an influential centre of the training of preachers and of the study of education, which was in the next century relocated to Cambridge and eventually became part of Cambridge University. In 1762 he was appointed Minister of a chapel at Moorfields in the City of London, where he served until his death. He was a noted preacher. His hymns include "Christ Watches O'er the Embers"; he wrote the last lines of the epitaph on his headstone: "I have sinned / I have repented - I have trusted / I have loved - - - I rest / I shall rise / and through the grace of Christ / however unworthy / I shall reign." (bio by: Sheilia W.)
