Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg while leading his unit. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the battles of Carrick's Ford and the Wilderness, Va."
