Grandson of Samuel Sparhawk and Sarah Whiting, and son of Samuel and Johanna Winchester. Samuel Sparhawk, Jr. was the third Samuel Sparhawk in his direct male line. As a Whiting, he was a descendant of Elizabeth St John and Reverend Samuel Whiting. Elizabeth St John was directly descended from Margaret Beauchamp, grandmother of King Henry VII, and Margaret's first husband Oliver St John.

Samuel married Elizabeth Gardner. Their daughter Mary Sparhawk married her cousin General Isaac Sparhawk Gardner.

Isaac Gardner (1726-75) in 1775 served in the militia at Lexington, and when the engagement was over, while waiting for his men to [p.261] rally, he was shot and killed by British soldiers. He was born in Brookline, Mass.

Hartshorn Marsh (1748-91) served as a private at Bunker Hill, Ticonderoga, and Bennington, Massachusetts troops. He was born in Douglass; died in Barre, Mass.
