Fell to His Death

W.H. London Falls Forty Feet to His Death near Homestead Monday - Was Buried Here

A very sad accident near Whittaker Pa., near Homestead Monday noon, when William H. London, formerly of this place and of Paradise, fell while at work for the Carnegie Steel Company and died of his injuries five hours later.

Mr. London at 12:15 had gone up near the roof of the tall building to repair some leaking steam pipes and in some way lost his balance falling to the floor below a distance of forty feet alighting on his head on a solid steel roll three or four feet in diameter and weighing several tons. Medical assistance was immediately summoned but he never regained consciousness and died at 5:30 the same evening with what has been termed concussion of the brain. The back part of his head was crushed by the fall. Two foreign workmen were the only two occupants of that part of the building when the accident occurred and as they were not watching him it will never be known just how the accident occurred.

The remains were brought here on the 2:49 train Wednesday and taken to the home of his wife's parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Walker.

He was the son of Wallace (now deceased) and Sarah of Paradise near Big Run and is survived by mother, wife and three sons, namely Chester, William and Oliver, aged 6 years, 4 years and 2 years respectively.

Mr. London was well known having lived near this place and attended school here. He had been in the employ of the Carnegie Steel company of that place for the past ten years and had obtained a lofty position with that company.

The funeral services were conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Walker at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon September 12. Rev. R.C. McMinn having had charge of the services. Interment was made in the cemetery at this place. His age was 36 years and three months. He was a member of the Reformed Church at Homestead, services having been conducted at that place before departure of the body. Mr. London was an honorable and highly respected man who always attended to his duties and did his work well. He has a large number of acquaintances who deeply mourn the loss.
