Catherine was born at 33 School Lane, Old Machar (Woodside), Aberdeenshire, the sixth of nine children of James Davidson and Charlotte Davidson Davidson [sic.]. Catherine's parents were distant cousins from Birse, Aberdeenshire.

She was a paper mill worker in her youth.

Catherine married John Cummins Reid on July 7, 1876 at 53 Barron Street, Old Machar.

She became the mother of John Leslie in 1877, Williamina Birnie in 1878, Gordon Davidson in 1880, William D. in 1884, Charles D. in 1887, Mabel D. in 1888, K. Grace in 1892, Robert D. in 1895, and two other children who died before they could be named.

Catherine and her husband migrated to the United States in 1883 with sons John and Gordon. Their daughter Williamina had already died, aged about 3 years. Catherine also lost a baby while en route.

The family spent many years in Dell Rapids, Minnehaha Co., South Dakota before settling in Lambertville in 1895. Catherine lived there for the rest of her life.

Catherine had a 63rd birthday party. She wore a taffeta dress and her hair was pulled back in a bun on top of her head. She had dark wavy hair with only a few streaks of gray. She danced a lot and then said to her daughter-in-law, "I 'dunno' what's the matter with my feet!"

Incidentally, her granddaughter Marie also had brown hair with a streak of gray as a senior citizen.

She died at the age of 72. The cause is difficult to read on her death certificate, but it appears to be due to the effects of Erysipelas, a bacterial skin infection frequently found on the face. It is easily treated with antibiotics these days. She outlived her husband by 27 years.

Thanks so much to Heather from VA, who so graciously sponsored Catherine's memorial.
