Actress. She is remembered as an American actress appearing in 22 Hollywood films from 1948 to 1967. Prior to being in films, she appeared in plays starting in 1929 to 1946. After making her New York City on Broadway debut in a 1926 production of "Night Stick," she appeared in over fifteen more stage productions. She appeared on television shows from the late 1950s through the early 1970s. She played a grandmother in three episodes on "My Three Sons," had two episodes on "Hazel," plus a long list of one-time appearances including "Perry Mason," "The Virginian, "Family Affair," and the "Donna Reed Show." She had roles in two Alfred Hitchcock Presents, "Wet Saturday" in 1956 and "Servant Problem" in 1961. Never in a lead role, she often was seen as a snooty society matron. One of her best-known roles was in the 1949 comedy film, "My Friend Irma," which was the debut of the comedy team Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Other noteworthy roles include ithe 1950 film, "Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town;" the 1954 Academy Award winning film, "Three Coins in a Fountain;" the 1951 romance drama, "A Place in the Sun;" with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor; and in 1955, "Daddy Long Legs." Her last film role was in 1967 "Once You Kiss a Stranger," playing a matron aunt. Her last professional appearance was as Rhoda Dabney in a 1972 television episode of "Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law." She was the daughter of a Canadian-born hotel manager or insurance salesman, Thomas Givney and his wife, Sarah McHugh. She married first J. George Stutzaman on December 17, 1919 in Idaho but was divorced by 1930. Later, she married Frances Alton Connolly. Following a 43-year career in acting, she died as a widow in her home.
