The Wakeman family came to Connecticut from England, then moved to Gustavus, Trumbull County, Ohio. The Lester Pelton family came to Massachusetts from England, moved to Connecticut, then to Gustavus, Trumbull County, Ohio, where the two family met.
William Shipman Wakeman, was born February 18, 1841, in Warren, Ashtabula County, Ohio to George and Wealthy H. Wakefield Wakemen. He married Emma Jane Pelton (b. June 29, 1845 in Gustavus, Trumbull County, Ohio to Lester and Mary Polly Rood Pelton) on September 6, 1861, in Hartstown, Pennsylvania. He was a blacksmith and wagon maker and served as a PVT in Co 16 of the Ohio Calvary in the Civil War. In 1877, he brought his family to Tennessee in a covered wagon and his name is given to Wakeman Road and Wakeman Crossing in White Bluff. William and Emma had one son (William) and three daughters: Amy (b. 11-02-1863 m. George Martin), Ada (b. 04-10-1868, m. Robert Winfield Martin) and Alma (b. 01-24-1870, m. Lovell Martin). William died October 16, 1963; Emma died October 20, 1906, and both are buried in the Williams Cemetery.
