Deaf and dumb all his life; attended Fulton MO School for the Deaf, where he met his wife Ruth, who was also deaf. In about 1887 (age 47), he also went blind. He had lost the sight in one eye from a cataract and the other from stripping sorghum cane, a blade striking him in the eye. But although he was blind he still did chores and would saw the firewood. He had a wire stretched from the barn to the house and was able to follow this to do his work. Grandson Roy Richmond Holman remembered climbing up on his grandfather's lap and putting this thumb and finger over his grandfather's mouth to tell him that a meal was ready.
