Explorer. Born Martin Pinson in Palos de Moguer Huelva, Spain, he was an able sea pilot and navigator, as well as the senior partner of the firm of Pinzon Brothers, Spanish ship-builders. In the 1480s, he sailed the coast of Africa to explore the far southwest passages. He is most noted for being the owner and captain of the ship Pinta, sailing on Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the New World in 1492. After his return from the expedition, he died at his home in Spain in March 1493.
