Andrew Meyer and his brother George made their fortunes adventuring to California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Andrew came to America with his family in 1834 on the sailing ship "Formosa". The Meyer family originally settled in Wayne CO Ohio, in the Mt. Eaton area. In 1843, Andrew came west, to Holt CO MO, first working as a farmhand on a farm near Oregon MO, then as a blacksmith at the Sac & Fox Indian Agency in Brown CO KS. In 1847 Andrew enlisted in the Oregon Battalion for service in the Mexican War. He mustered in at Fort Leavenworth KS on July 14th, and was assigned to Col. Powell's regiment, which shortly afterward set out on expedition across the plains to Fort Kearny NE. In the fall of 1848, as the Mexican War ended, his company was ordered back to Leavenworth to be discharged. In May 1849, Andrew and George, and a party of friends left the Sac & Fox Agency for the gold fields of California. After a long summer of travel across plains and mountains, the party reached their destination, Sutter's Mill, on the American River, near present day Coloma CA. The Meyer brothers staked out their claim, a productive one, and spent over a year panning & digging. In October 1850, Andrew went to San Francisco with his stash of gold dust and boarded the steamer Tennesse bound for Panama. He hiked across the Isthmus carrying his pack, and boarded another steamer bound for New York. After reaching New York, he went by rail to Philadelphia, where at The United States Mint, he deposited his gold dust and took a gold certificate in exchange. Andrew returned to Oregon MO, and wed Mary Secrist in 1851.
