Christian Gingrich Kurtz was a son of Samuel Kurtz & Barbara Gingrich, and was named after his maternal grandfather, Christian Gingrich. He married on January 18, 1883 in Elkhart County, Indiana, to Hannah Jane Puterbaugh, daughter of Henry Puterbaugh & Mary Lloyd. Chris Kurtz farmed in Vienna Township, Marshall County, Iowa, north of Marshalltown; in 1910, the family moved to a farm in nearby Taylor Township.

C.G. & Hannah Jane had seven children: Winnie, Mary, Walter (died age 15), Fay, Verna, Glenn, and Clell. Three of the daughters each had a set of twins.

The Kurtz plot in Conrad Cemetery holds Chris & Hannah Jane, their son Walter, and their twin grandsons Keith & Kenneth Coulter who died in infancy in March 1909.

Coulter comments: My father, Fred Earl Coulter, married the youngest Kurtz daughter, Verna, in 1910. Half a century later, he said his father-in-law, Chris Kurtz, was highly respected by all his neighbors. Father also recalled Chris' April 1914 funeral, which was held at the Kurtz farmhouse. As the family left the house to take the coffin to the Conrad cemetery, a tornado approached. But just before it reached them, it veered and circled around the buildings without causing damage. Guardian angels must have thought the family had enough sorrow already.
