Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps on board the USS Richmond. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Mobile Bay, Alabama on August 5, 1864. His citation reads "As captain of a gun during action against rebel forts and gunboats and with the ram Tennessee in Mobile Bay, 5 August 1864. Despite damage to his ship and the loss of several men on board as enemy fire raked her decks, Sgt. Martin fought his gun with skill and courage throughout the furious 2-hour battle which resulted in the surrender of the rebel ram Tennessee and in the damaging and destruction of batteries at Fort Morgan". His Medal was issued on December 31, 1864. He was one of 31 “Richmond” crewmembers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for their bravery during the Civil War (the others being Yeoman Thomas Atkinson, Quartermaster John Brazell, Captain of the Top Robert Brown, Master-At-Arms William M.
