Born in Woodville, Ala., a son of the late James A. and Maude (Farr) Whitaker, he lived in East Providence for 45 years.
Mr. Whitaker served in the Marine Corps from 1939 to 1941, and then was a sergeant in the Army from 1944 to 1946. He served in the Second Armored Division. He was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Primmer-Cordeiro Post 5385, VFW. He was a Mason and a member of Nathanael Greene Lodge 45, F & AM, Warwick, and the Sword of Bunkerhill, Lodge 99, Providence.
Besides his wife he leaves a son, Steven E. Whitaker of East Providence; two foster daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Lema of East Providence and Mrs. Madeline Cyr of Wilwaukee, Wis.; three sisters, Daisy Frazier of Woodville, Dorothy Walker of Holly Pond, Ala., and Sally Kenemar of Scottsboro, Ala.; two brothers, Zane Whitaker of Woodville, Bruce Whitaker of Guntersville, Ala., and two grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Ave. Burial with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
