Born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, he attended the University of Arkansas, Harvard, and MIT. He started as a proponent of European "International Style" architecture, but grew dissatisfied with the style's cold sterility. He began to advocate beauty and permanence in architecture, asserting that buildings should reflect universal and timeless values rather than "transient enthusiasms." He became one of America's most popular architects, known as "the most quoted architect since the death of Frank Lloyd Wright."
