Son of Henry & Sarah (Klinck) Ayling. Husband of Martha Elizabeth Hervey, m. Feb 23, 1869 in Peoria County, IL.

In 1882, he moved to Kansas, where he was a partner with the firm of Insley and Ayling, which sold boots, shoes, clothing, etc. He later became a Methodist Minister.
