DEATH: He died of injuries received in a blasting accident in East Pool Mine, Illogan. Powder exploded in tamping. 'Died in Treleigh Parish' (Part of Redruth).

His death is recorded in the GRO indexes for the Redruth Registration District in the December quarter of 1871, under reference 5c 178. He is listed as James Argall, aged 60.

OBITUARY: The Times reported on 20 November 1871: "At East Pool Mine, James Argall was killed by an explosion of gunpowder. One of his sons was lately maimed for life by a similar accident in a neighbouring mine."

County Observer and Monmouthshire Central Advertiser - 25 November 1871:

FATAL MINE ACClDENTS.-Two fatal mine accidents are reported from Cornwall. At East Pool mine James Argall was killed by an explosion of gunpowder. One of his sons was lately maimed for life by a similar accident in a neighbouring mine. At Beam mine a carpenter named Joseph Payne fell a distance of 40 feet, and died soon afterwards.
