Richard was the fourth of seven children born to John W Ledbetter and Elizabeth Whiteside Ledbetter. He married Elizabeth Harris (December 1831/2); Martha Ursula Searcy (28 March 1867); Mary Caroline Whiteside (6 Sep 1867); and Nancy Edgerton (after August 1872). He had three known children with Mary: Mary Elizabeth, John Underwood, and Richard Carrie.
