He was the Navigator and one of nine airmen killed when RB-24E Liberator #42-64398 crashed, five miles southeast of the airfield. The pilot was making his third attempt at making an emergency landing after an engine failure, when the bomber mushed into the ground and exploded, killing all aboard.
