French actor. Born into a family of musicians, the paternal line of which is of Swiss origin (Piotta in Ticino).
He appeared in many different roles, from seducer to cop to gangster, in more than 170 movies. He played in six films directed by Luis Buñuel including Belle de Jour (1967) and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), but also appeared in Jean-Luc Godards Contempt (1963) and as the main antagonist in Alfred Hitchcocks Topaz (1969). Besides he played in numerous films by Claude Sautet, sometimes co-starring with Romy Schneider. Among them is "The Things of Life (1970) and Max et les ferrailleurs (1971). His last great role was cardinal Melville, elected pope, in "Habemus Papam".
Piccoli died of an intracranial hemorrhage and was cremated at Evreux. His ashes were scattered at his property, the medieval Manoir de la Court at Saint-Philibert.
