Ever since the age of 8, when he first sat in a jet at an air show, Ryan fell in love with flying. A native of Henry County, Virginia, he graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1998. He was a Navy pilot and had been a flying instructor since April 2005. Ryan was killed when his E-2C Hawkeye turboprop plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the USS Harry S. Truman off the coast of North Carolina. Ryan leaves behind his wife and child, his parents, his brother, sister-in-law, brand-new nephew who was named for him, and many friends.
