EAST LIVERPOOL — Marie B. Hayes, 81, known for her dedication to community beautification and improvements, died at her home at 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, 2007. She had been in failing health for the past several months.
Born on April 1, 1926, in Litchfield, Ill., a daughter of the late Charles W. and Mina Hartke Bierbaum, she was educated in the Litchfield School System before attending Valpariso University.
Mrs. Hayes was executive secretary of the American Osteopathic Association prior to marrying East Liverpool physician, John W. Hayes, on Dec. 18, 1963, in Chicago. Moving to East Liverpool, she became known for her dedication to Thompson Park and the St. John Lutheran Church of which she was a member. At the Park, she had planted hundreds of flowers and worked diligently to enhance the grounds, especially in the area of the main entrance.
Mrs. Hayes was also active at St. John Lutheran Church, where she had served as a member and secretary of the council and president of the women's organization. Dedicated to the practice of osteopathic medicine, she was a member and past president of both the Ohio and National osteopathic auxiliaries. She was also a member of the Monday Literary Club in East Liverpool and the New Century Club and served as a Hospice volunteer.
Her husband, Dr. John W. Hayes, a native of Chillicothe, was a past president of the American Osteopathic Association and established the East Liverpool Osteopathic Hospital prior to World War II. Dr. Hayes died Feb. 16, 1982.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Roland E. "Jim" (Brenda) Reed of Mesa, Ariz., along with two sisters, Mrs. John (Lois) Senter of Washington, Mo., and Mrs. C. L. "Kelly" (Wilma) Zimmerman of Ely, Minn. In addition, there are two brothers, Charles R. Bierbaum and his wife, June, of Litchfield, Ill., and Leon D. Bierbaum and his wife, Rhonda, of Surprise, Ariz.
Other family members include two stepgrandchildren, Mrs. William (Karen) Tabor and Jeffery Reed, along with his wife, Kathleen, of Mesa, Ariz., as well as five stepgrandsons, Aaron and Jason Tabor, Andrew, Collin and Nicholas Reed, all of Mesa.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. John Lutheran Church on Hill Boulevard in East Liverpool with the Rev. Paul Burgeson and Dr. H. Gene Toot officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church.
Friends may call at the Dawson Funeral Home, 215 West Fifth St., from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007.
