Ancel was the son of Rev. Charles and Mary Ann Dyer Caddy. He was injured while standing too close to a cannon that had discharged. The force of the shot caused him to be thrown a distance of several yards, causing severe injuries. He later died from the effects of this trauma at Ft. Donelson, TN. He was buried near where he died,his father, Rev. Charles Caddy, traveled to Tennessee during war time, found the grave and returned with the body to Lima, Ohio. Originally buried in the Old Lima Cemetery, his grave was moved to Woodlawn cemetery in 1968.
