Highmore, Saturday for H. Rath (sic) who died Tuesday at a Miller hospital.
The Rev. William Meile officiated and burial was in the Highmore City Cemetery.
Pall bearers were: Tim Houdek, Jim Henson, Dave Fieldsend, Mike Konrad and Jeff Konrad. Honorary pallbearers were: Richard Raske, Wilbert Goldsmith, Walt Prinz, Herb Bloomenrader, Orville Dixon, Ben Bezner, Max Brookins, Milo McDonald, Jess Millar, Chauncy Klebach, Bob Ugland, LeRoy Hamlin, and all Masons. Jay H. Rath, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles P. Rath, was born November 6, 1898, at Tripp, where he received his education from the Tripp public schools. Jay left the Tripp area to join the United States Army during World War I. After his discharge December 17, 1918, he moved to Hyde County, where he worked as a foreman, for a threshing crew. He was then employed by the Standard Oil Company in Highmore and Onida. On May 18, 1926, Jay married Laura May Fieldsend at Highmore. In 1938, he started the Rath Transfer, a truck line operating between Sioux City, Iowa, and Pierre. During World War II he was employed by the Office of Defense Transportation. He was then appointed director of the Motor Fuel Tax division for the state of South Dakota in 1956. Jay held this position for 25 years until his retirement January 1, 1971. His entire life was one of devotion and service. He served as Mayor of Highmore from 1936 to 1948 and was active in many community affairs. He was a member of the American Legion Frank Vopat Post NO. 35 and of Ree Valley Lodge No. 70 AF&AM. Jay loved the outdoors not only as a sportsman but also as a lover of the scenery that surrounded him until his death Mar 16, 1976, at the Hand County Memorial Hospital. Although they had no children, Jay and Auntie, with much loving care and understanding, reared the eight orphaned children of Jess and Lorraine Fieldsend. He leaves to mourn his passing, five nephews, six nieces and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura, his parents, two sisters, and one brother."
