Sergeant Christopher Reyka was shot and killed while checking on two suspicious vehicles in a convenience store parking lot at approximately 1:20 am.

He had parked next to the two vehicles and was checking their license plates.

As he exited his patrol car, an occupant of one of the vehicles also exited the car and opened fire, striking Sergeant Reyka several times. Customers of the store immediately called 911 to report the shooting.

Sergeant Reyka was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

Sergeant Reyka had served with the Broward County Sheriff's Office for 18 years. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Reyka, Sgt. Christopher (Chris), 51, of Wellington, passed away August 10, 2007. He was born April 28, 1956 to the late George and Mary Reyka in Fairborn, OH.

He served his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corp. During his time in the military, he served in the security detail at Camp David guarding the President of the United States.

In December of 1989, he became a deputy with the Pompano Beach Police Department and in 1999 joined the Broward Sheriff's Office as a Detective. In June 2004, he was promoted to Sergeant in the Broward Sheriff's Office - Pompano Beach District.

Some of Chris's interests were running, biking, reading, his children's events and the Miami Dolphins.

He was a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America and a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church, West Palm Beach and St. Therese de Lieux, Wellington.

His life centered around his family and he was always there for his friends and neighbors.

He never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Kim; his children, Ashley, Sean, Autumn, Spencer; his brothers, John, Mark, Curtis, Michael and his sisters, Marcie and Tracey.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 14, 2007 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-9:00p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home North, 200 West Copans Road, Pompano Beach. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 12:00 noon at the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise. Interment will follow at South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth.
