Born Margaret Ann "Annie" CRAWFORD, she was the daughter of William and Letitia CRAWFORD of Allegheny City,(now Northside Pittsburgh) Allegheny Co.,PA. Her siblings were:

Margaret married Thomas ADAMS on June 28, 1858 in the First United Presbyterian Church in Allegheny City. They had one son, Joseph Wilson ADAMS who was born in Indiana Co. PA. Margaret was left a widow with a three year old when her husband, Thomas, died in 1863 from wounds and disease suffered in the Civil War. She was living in Montgomery Twp, Indiana Co,PA at this time. Margaret married John D McAfoos on November 17, 1867. She died just five months into her second marriage at her home in what was at the time East Liberty (now Pittsburgh). Her eight year old son, Joseph, was raised by his Crawford uncles, James became his guardian.
