Comic Book Artist. He was an innovative comic book artist who sketched "Green Lantern", "The Hulk", "Captain Marvel", and "Spiderman". Born Eli Katz in Latvia, his Jewish Family emigrated to New York City in 1929 when he was three. Gil broke into the comic field in 1941 as an assistant in the Jack Binder's shop by erasing pencils and eventually became an inker and penciler. At the same time, he was drawing the "Scarlet Avenger" for MLJ for two years. He worked for Joe Simon and Jack Kirby from 1943 to 1944 saying he learned many things from Kirby. He began working for DC National Comics in 1944, shortly before joining the Army. When he returned, he drew Wildcat and the Sandman. In 1956 he showcased a character named Adam Strange, but the regular features thereafter were drawn by Carmine Infantino. Much later in his life he moved to California and became closely associated with development of cartoons for Hanna-Barbera. In 1997, he was inducted into both the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame and the Harvey Award Jack Kirby Hall of Fame.
