A son of Richard and Laura O. (Baldwin) Alsip, he married Gertrude Baker in 1914. She died August 19, 1959. The couple had no children, and lived at 808 W. Clark Street, Champaign, Illinois. On June 13, 1906, he became a firefighter for the City of Champaign. He was promoted to Assistant Chief in 1927 and Fire Chief in 1940. He retired from active duty from the department in 1952, but remained very active in the Illinois Fireman's Association. During his career, he initiated the use of fog nozzles and of chemicals to enable water to saturate a fire more quickly. In additions to other innovations, he conceived, organized and founded the Illinois State Fire College which became a part of the University of Illinois in 1925. The fire college is still inexistence and trains firefighters from all over the United States. An active Free Mason, he was Worshipful Master of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M., 1926-1927.
