Psychologist, Author. He was the founder of Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). After receiving a doctorate in clinical psychology from Columbia University in 1947, he spent several years undergoing psychoanalysis. He used classic techniques of analysis in his job at a state mental hygiene clinic in New Jersey. Eventually he began drifting from traditional Freudian analysis as he found it "a waste of time". He turned to Greek, Roman, and modern philosophers and his own experiences, and founded the Manhattan Institute in 1959. His proclaimed that "therapy doesn't have to take years", and the role of therapists is to "intervene directly, using strategies and homework exercises to help patients first learn to accept themselves as they are and to retrain themselves to avoid destructive emotions". His methods, along with those of Doctor Aaron Beck, provided the basis for what is known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. In a 1982 survey, clinical psychologists ranked Albert Ellis ahead of Freud when asked to name the figure who had exerted the greatest influence on their field. Ellis wrote or co-wrote more than 75 books, many of them best sellers, and was dubbed the "Lenny Bruce of Psychotherapy" because of his penchant for driving points home with humor. (bio by: C.
