He was the son of John Hendrick (1765-1818) and Lucy Ellington (1770-1808). His father married second Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Hunt Harkness

John, Jr. then married his step sister, Nancy Stainbach Abernathy, daughter of Mary and her first husband Sterling Abernathy. Mary then married third James Harkness.

He migrated to southern Caddo Parish about 1850 with most of his family.

John is the younger brother of Gustavus Hendrick
