A lifelong Dearborn resident, Hubbard served his community in numerous ways.
He is most notably remembered for his time as the treasurer for the city of Dearborn from 1982-93. This position was retired after Hubbard left the job, giving him the honor of being the last elected treasurer for the city.
"He was a wiz with numbers and had one of the highest typing scores ever when he worked as an administrative assistant in the Wayne County Road Commission Finance Department," said Nancy Hubbard, sister to the late treasurer.
Prior to his position with the city, Hubbard was an elected Dearborn School Board member. He was also an appointed member of the city planning committee.
A plethora of degrees and years in the collegiate system prepared Hubbard for the numerous jobs he held throughout his life.
After graduating from Fordson High School, Hubbard studied at the U.S. Naval Stenography School, as well as Sophia University in Japan, where he learned to fluently read, write and speak Japanese.
Following his education overseas, Hubbard attended Ferris State University, Wayne State University, the University of Michigan and the Detroit Institute of Technology.
"He had quite the education, he was very fortunate," Nancy added.
During his life, Hubbard was an active member of numerous organizations including the U.S. Marine Corps. League, the American Legion, and the Polish Legion, post No. 75.
In addition, Hubbard was also skilled in the art of Judo, and was a member of the Pan American Judo team for the Olympics in 1952. He was also a Judo instructor, earning himself the title of Outstanding Teacher for Michigan in 1969.
Hubbard also exercised his teaching abilities by leading Japanese classes at Henry Ford Community College.
Hubbard was the son of the late Mayor of Dearborn, Orville L Hubbard, who served from 1942 to 1977.
He leaves behind his wife Dorothy and four children, Pierre, and Mark Hubbard, John and Marianne Tyler as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was the brother of James C. Hubbard, John J. Hubbard, Henry Ford Hubbard and Nancy Hubbard.
