A prominent Philadelphia businessman, he bought the "Philadelphia Record" newspaper in 1877 and turned it into a successful periodical. He made his fortune in street railways, knitting mills, banking and real estate.

In 1894 he was the Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania Governor, losing to Republican Daniel Hastings.
