Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 10th Maine Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 17th Maine Volunteer Infantry regiment. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on December 2, 1864 for "gallant and distinguished services during the war, and especially at the Battle of the Wilderness, Va."
