James W. Russell was born in 28 Dec 1827 in Williamson Co., TN to Henry and Sarah Griffin Russell. He married Elizabeth W. Hall on Jan. 28, 1847 in Williamson County, TN.

I have not been able to locate the couple in the 1850 census, but by 1860, they had settled in Giles Co, TN where they lived out their lives. James' mother's War of 1812 application also says she moved to Giles County after her husband died in 1854, so it's safe to assume James was there by then. They had children Nancy (Horace Fogg), Sarah (Neil Hollis), Soloma (presumably died young), Eudora (Tazwell Gilbert), and John A. J. (Laura Dobbins).

In 1910, he can found living with daughter Eurdora Gilbert and her family. He is buried next to his wife with only fieldstones marking his grave. No death certificate exists for him, but his will was filed on July 1, 1914, so I'm assuming he died sometime in 1914.

He served in the 53rd Tennessee during the Civil War as a wagoneer. His pension and Old Soldier's Home application provide wonderful information on his service.
