Amanda and her parents/siblings are in Washington Twp., Dutchess Co. NY, in 1830/40, where the 1840 census has nine family members. It's most likely another child was born between 1826 & 1830 to John and Elizabeth (Williams) Small which was previously unknown/documented and this child died before the 1850 census was taken. Also possible, the unknown female child [age 10 thru 14] listed in the 1840 census was previously mistaken in the 1830 census as a boy, under age 5 and then died or married before the 1850 census. (*see below).

Amanda A. Small married HENRY HALL, between the 1840 census enumeration date for her father's family and early 1842. This time frame logically coincides with the birth of Amanda's and Henry's one and only known child, on 26 Nov 1842. The June 29, 1900 census for Harrison County, Missouri, says Amanda and Henry were married for 63 years, which should be taken with skepticism since Amanda would have been only 14 or 15 years old with a marriage year of 1836 or 1837. The birth years for Henry and Amanda were also wrong in their 1900 census enumeration. As well, the 1840 census for her father's family reasonably shows Amanda is still living in her parent's household at the time. As well, there is no separate census enumeration for a Henry Hall in Dutchess Co NY, in the 1840 census, which means he was still most likely living in his own family's household in 1840. At 23 years old, Henry does not show in the 1840 census for John & Elizabeth Small's family either. [*see below].

In the 1850 census of Amenia Township, Dutchess Co NY, Amanda is living with her husband Henry and child, Maria "Elizabeth". Her parents are either living with, or near her siblings listed below; except for Helen, who doesn't show up any where until the 1880, 1900, 1905 and 1910 censuses, in Blackhawk and Hardin Co Iowa.

Since none of these Smalls or Halls are listed in the 1855 New York census, it's likely Amanda and her husband and daughter, as well as Amanda's parents and siblings; Stephen, William, Theren and Eliza, removed to Northwest Illinois between 1850 and 1855 while Helen is unaccounted for. As well, father John is known to have received a land warrant via an act of Congress for 120 acres, that was given to him for his service in the War of 1812.

Except for Amanda's parents that died in 1859 and her sister Helen, the siblings of Amanda are found with their families in the 1860 census of Carroll Co IL, living in close proximity to Amanda and her husband and daughter. Parents John and Elizabeth were probably living with daughter Eliza Jane's family in Milledgeville, since that's where they're both buried.

Brothers William and Stephen remove from Carroll Co Illinois, to Iowa, some time in the late 1860s. They're found living 2 households from each other in the 1870 census of Hardin County, Iowa. William lives out his life in Iowa as Stephen removes to Slayton Twp., Murray Co Minnesota, some time after 1885, where he's found living with his son-in-law and daughter's family, Ida Jane (Small) Briggs, along with his daughter Susan A. and son, Martin Henry.

Brother Theren/on, removes from Carroll Co Illinois, to Missouri, some time in the late 1860s, as did Amanda and her husband. In the Bethany, Harrison Co Missouri 1870 census, "Wheler" Small (born 1832/NY) and his wife Susan (born 1846/OH) are found living 2 households from Amanda and her husband, Henry. The ages and states of birth are identical to Theren/on and Susan's 1880 census identity. The census says they got married in July 1870 which would also match perfectly with the birth of their first born child in December 1871. So it can be safely said that "WHE(E)LER" IS A NICKNAME for THEREN, especially when one considers the fact that "Theren/on is not found any where else in the 1870 census. Likewise, Theren/on and wife Susan are found again living one household from Amanda and her husband Henry in the 1880 census of Grant, Harrison co., Missouri. In both the 1870 and 1880 census, neighbor Albert Reeves is living in between them which also matches up with the plat map of 1876 (link below). As well, Bethany and Grant are interchangeable in the 1870/1880 censuses. Susan's father, James Gillespie and oldest brother, Martin Gillespie are holding over 500 acres of land adjacent to Theren/on and Susan's property in the 1876 plat map link below.

Sister Eliza Jane, removes from Carroll Co Illinois, to Black Hawk Co Iowa, after the death of her husband in 1876 and before the 1880 census was taken. She's found living as a widow with her 4 children and her oldest sister, Helen (Small) Atkin, a widow. Eliza Jane and Helen then moved on to Hardin Co Iowa, in the area where their brothers, William and Stephen had moved to previously. The two sisters are found living together in the same household in 1900 and 1905 with Eliza Jane's son by her first marriage, Theren Prindle and his wife, Margaret. Theren Prindle dies between 1905 & 1910. Helen (Small) Atkins is last found living in the April 15 1910 census with Margaret Prindle.

Other notes worth mentioning:

The 1880 census for Harrison Co Missouri, shows living with Amanda and Henry an "adopted daughter" named Sarah, born about 1862 and a "son" named Benjamin, born about 1856 in Indiana. This Benjamin is probably the "Benjamin Carter" listed in the 1885 census for Ellis, Hardin Co Iowa, living in the household of Amanda's brother, Stephen Small, since Benjamin is listed as being born in Indiana in 1856, like he was in the 1880 census. As well, in the 1860 and 1870 census for Amanda and Henry, there's no previous record of a son, hence I believe this son named Benjamin was also, either adopted after 1870, was a close friend of the Hall & Small families or the census enumerator was in error, since the ages for Amanda and Henry are erroneous in the 1880 census as well.

There's another Henry and Amanda Hall, living in Caldwell Co Missouri, at the same time, of the same approximate age with children, not to be confused with the subjects here.

The Thomas L. Atkins, born about 1821 in Massachusetts, that shows up in the 1860 census for Wysox Twp., Carroll co., Illinois, may be the spouse or a brother of the unknown Mr. Atkins that sister Helen married. However, Helen is not found any where close to said Atkins in the aforementioned census. This Mr. Atkins is living with Amanda's brother, Theren Small and the Theren Prindle who was the son of Amanda's sister, Eliza Jane, from her first marriage to Benjamin Prindle. Said Mr. Atkins seems to have disappeared after the 1860 census and hasn't been found in any census prior either.

The spelling for Theren has also been written/transcribed in various records as Theron/Thurman/Thron/Theodore. "Theren" has been chosen here since his internment was stated so.

The original legibility on Amanda's death certificate of her father's last name and mother's maiden last name was not of very good quality. The original writing on the DC looks as though it's been traced over by someone, turning the original maiden name of Amanda's mother from "WILLIAMS" into "WILSON", in error. The informant listed on Amanda's DC is "Nellie Prather". Nellie was a daughter of Amanda's brother, Theren Small.
