Tyrus married Sarah Specht on May 2, 1859 in the EUB Church in Elizabethville. They had 16 children. During the Civil War, Tyrus served in Co. K, 173rd Pennsylvania Drafted Militia.

The son of David & Elizabeth Snyder, he married Sarah Specht May 2, 1859, in Elizabethville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Sarah J. (b. @1860), George F. (b. @1860 [?]), Margaret W. (b. @1861), John Calvin (b. 07/11/63), Ira Alvin (b. 08/10/64), Andrew Harvey (b. 10/10/65 or 66), Ellen J. (b. 10/02/67 - married a Klinger), Marie Elizabeth "Lizzie" (b. 10/04/70 - married Samuel G. Bateman), Carrie Catherine (b. 04/10/72 - married Grant Ritzman), Mary Ellen (b. 05/28/74 - married Richard Clough), Edward (b. @1876), Harry M. (b. 01/02/81 per his death certificate but is in the 1880 census b. @1878), and Catharine Irene (b. 03/19/84 - married Richard Fatheringale Davison). In 1860, he was a tanner (presumably; occupation on the census is scrawled) living with his family in Washington Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Dauphin County October 30, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 3 as a private with Co. K, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). He deserted November 27, 1862, apprehended December 31, but honorably discharged with his company August 18, 1863. He is in the company register, the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file, and his pension index as "Cyrus."

Cause of his death is listed as "chronic interstitial nephritis" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
