Business Man, Dies

Stearns B. Hatch, 85, prominent livestock man, church leader and business man, died Tuesday at his home in South Bountiful.

Born December 6, 1853 within the bounds of the South Bountiful ward, he was a son of Ira S. and Jane Bee Hatch. On Oct. 6, 1875, he married Elizabeth Jane Ellis, who died March 26, 1930.

At the time of his death he was president of the Deseret Livestock Company and the Hatch Brothers Stock Company, both of which he organized at Woods Cross. He also was instrumental in organizing the Woods Cross Canning Company, of which he was elected president in 1892.

Mr. Hatch was a director in the Bountiful State Bank until about a year ago and also a director in the Growers Market at Salt Lake. He helped organize the Clearfield and Woods Cross Lumber companies.

From 1905 until 1915 he was Bishop of the South Bountiful ward. Later he was a counselor in the South Davis Stake presidency after which he was a stake high councilman. His entire life was spent in Woods Cross with the exception of a year and a half in Idaho.

Surviving are nine of 12 children: Ira S. Hatch, Salt Lake; Mrs. Melvin Nelson and Mrs. George Reed, Clearfield; John L. Hatch, Wilford W. Hatch and Mrs. David Howard, Woods Cross; Mrs. Leona J. Wilcox, Farmington; Mrs. Oscar Eskelson, Kamas; Mrs. John C. Smith, La Verne, Calif.; 42 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
