Geard was married to a catholic woman for 20 years and had no children.

On February 17, 1854 Gerd Quadhammer, widower married Helena Margaretha Supke in Zetel. The couple had been formerly engaged January 21, 1853. Gerd and Helena's wedding had been delayed because of a disagreement between the bridesmaides and the relatives.

Oldenberg: Oldbenberg was once an indepenent kingdom, similar in many respects to Holland. It was located along the coast between Denmark and Holland and between Germany and the sea. It was low land, with marshes, canals to drain them, windmills to pump the water into the canals, and dikes to hold back the sea. It had Wilhelmshaven (Williams Harbor), a good deep water port on the North Sea Coast.

As a young man, Gerd Quathamer was a dike worker. As part of his work and for sport, he had become the local pole-vaulting champion.

Pole-vaulting in the low country was used for broad jumping rather than for high jumping as we know it today. The jumper ran toward the canal, thrust his pole before him into the center of the ditch and jumped, swinging his body up and across the canal on the pole. He then pulled his pole from the canal and ran on the next one.

Once, during a storm, a bad break in the dike threatened to flood the land behind it. Gerd, the champion vaulter, was sent to warn the people in the villages.

As a result of his exertion that day, Gerd's lungs were permanently damaged and he could no longer do any heavy labor. In appreciation for his service to the community, he was given the position of woodskeeper.

In this position, he was provided a house at the edge of a small forest near Williams Harbor. He thus had a house for his family and a place to raise a garden and to keep a cow and a few geese.

Gerd Died on December 2, 1870 in Oldenburg Germany. He was buried there. Helena immigrated to the United States of America in 1877 with her two sons, Geard and Fred. They came by boat to New York, then went by rail to Nebraska. The two daughters, Catherine and Marie had come to the United States some years earlier.

Helena died October 15, 1877 at the age of 55 in Crete Saline Nebraska and is buried at Kramer Lancaster County Nebraska in the Kramer Lutheran Cemetery.
