His mother was Cecilia J. Johnson, Adam Johnson's sister. Charles' father was Charles Furman, whom Cecilia married without knowing that he was already married, and their son Charles later repudiated his biological father and took the surname Adams. Charles Adams married Jessica Furman on 14 January 1893 in Omaha.

Charles and Jessie moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and on 15 March 1900 Charles was murdered by Jessie with a gunshot to the head.

The remains of Charles Adams, who was killed in Cincinnati Thursday night [15 March], arrived in Omaha last night, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Robert Duncan, and Mr. Duncan. The remains were taken to the Duncan residence at 2628 Davenport Street. Mrs. Adams, the wife of the deceased, who is supposed to have killed her husband, is now in custody in Cincinnati awaiting the verdict of the coroner's jury.

Cincinnati, Ohio, 22 March 1900
Coroner Schwab, in his verdict in the case in which Charles Adams was killed, used the following language:
"Charles Adams came to his death from a pistol shot wound in the brain, inflicted by Jessie Adams, wife of the deceased."
Mrs. Adams appeared today in the police court and was held to appear before that court on April 12, in a bond of $5,000, which was given. A singular circumstance in connection with this case is that the mother of the dead man, Charles Adams, has paid several visits to Mrs. Jessie Adams in the county jail. In one of these it is said she assured the accused woman that she would give her a home in the future.
