United States Army General. Born in Dyersburg, Tennessee he was selected to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1920, graduating in 1924 with a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Infantry. In 1928, after serving in several stateside assignments, he graduated from the US Army Infantry Officer course at Fort Benning, Georgia and was assigned to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. From 1934 until 1936 he was assigned as Training and Operations Officer, S-3, for the 15th Infantry Regiment in Tientsin, China. Two years later, graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After the US entered World War II in December 1941, he became the Assistant Chief of Staff for Training and Operations, G-3, of the 4th Corps, headquartered at Fort Lewis, Washington, serving in that position at the rank of colonel until August 1943. The following month he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and assigned as Chief of Staff of the 14th Corps, supervising the planning and execution of combat operations in the Pacific Theater, specifically Guadalcanal, New Georgia, and Bougainville. In November 1944 he was promoted to the rank of major general and assigned to command the 23rd (Americal) Infantry Division, serving until the division was deactivated in December 1945, leading it during combat operations in the Southern Philippines. In August 1945 he accepted the surrender of the Japanese occupying Cebu Island, Philippines. After World War II, he served as commander of the Joint Military Mission for Aid to Turkey from 1950 until 1952. In 1953 he was assigned as Commander, US Forces Austria, receiving promotion to the rank of lieutenant general and serving in that position until 1955, when he returned to the US and became Commander of the 5th US Army, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. He retired in that position in 1961 with 37 years of continuous military service. Among his military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He died in Lake Forest, Illinois at the age of 75. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
