William Rowe, Sr. was born at Heston, Cornwall, England April 29, 1867 and departed this life November 18, 1929, at the age of 62 years; six months and nineteen days. He came to America with his parents about sixty years ago, settling at Mine Hill, New Jersey, five years later he moved to Bethel, Pa., and in 1879 he came to Scranton, where he has since resided. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Stevens in Scranton, February 7, 1889. To this union ten children were born, five sons and five daughters. He was preceded in death by one son, Edward, who died in France in 1918 and one daughter, Blanche, who died in 1913. Mr. Rowe followed the occupation of mining until two years ago. In November last year he and his family moved from the farm west of town to their present home in Scranton. He was thought to be fair in health when he was taken suddenly ill, and an examination at the hospital revealed the seriousness of his condition. Everything possible was done for his recovery, but of no avail, and the Spirit took its departure, after a brief illness of ten days. Mr. Rowe was good to his family, a good neighbor, honest and industrious and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows Lodges. He is survived by his beloved wife, four sons and four daughters: Henry Rowe, Scranton; John Rowe, Kansas City; William and Clarence, Scranton; Elizabeth Rowe, Kansas City; Mrs. Margaret Barraclough, Scranton; Mrs. Edith Erskine, Topeka and Miss Beulah Rowe of the home; also one brother, Fred Rowe, Virden, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Clemens and Mrs. Thomas Eversole both of Kansas City and seven grandchildren besides numerous friends, all of which sympathized with the bereaved family. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Basquin at the Methodist church, Wednesday, November 20 at 2 p.m. Interment in the Scranton cemetery. 21 Nov 1929 Scranton Gazette
