Mary Polly Williams McFall Springer and family were one of those to find their fortune during the California gold rush. The family, along with about 88 men, 69 women and 86 children under 18 years old, left Fremont in April 1862 headed west. By August 1865 some of the party started back home to Fremont.
2nd Husband Ferdinand O. Springer had panned enough gold to purchase a farm but he had however become quite ill during the rigors and died just 2 years after his return in 1867, leaving Mary a widow for a second time.
