Hazel Winona Highfill died early Saturday morning, July 29, 2000 in the home of her son in Norman. She was 81.
The funeral will be Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, 2 p.m. First United Methodist Church in Alva with the Revs. Darrell Hardy and Weegie Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherokee City Cemetery in Cherokee under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home.
Mrs. Highfill will lie in state Monday evening until 9 p.m. at the Trout Funeral Home and from 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.
Born July 23, 1919, in Hollis, she was the daughter of William Walter and Annie Arbelle Barefoot. She attended school at Dryden and graduated from Hollis High School in 1937. She later completed a B.S. Ed and M.S. Ed at Northwestern State College.
On July 4, 1942, she married Cleal Leland "Dick" Highfill in Woodward. The couple made their first home in Hollis, where Dick was a coach in the public schools. They then moved to Wewoka and then to Alva in 1947.
Hazel began teaching in Alva elementary public schools in 1952. She retired in 1984 after teaching third grade for 32 years.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Alva and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Delta Zeta Alumni, her extension homemakers club, and the Woods County Retired Teachers Association.
Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, cooking and canning, gardening and oil painting.
In 1995, she and her husband moved to Ponca City to be closer to their son and family.
Surviving are her sons, Dr. Joe Highfill of Norman, Dr. Jim Highfill and his wife Judy of Ponca City and Dr. Dick Highfill and his wife Ann of Jackson, Miss.; grandchildren, Dr. Carrie Highfill Sessom and her husband Dr. Wade Sessom of Bixby, Matt Highfill of Tulsa, Lance Highfill of Ponca City, and Mike Highfill of Jackson, Miss; and great-grandchildren, Karsten and Avery Sessom.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aug. 27, 1996, her parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Memorials may be made to the Dick and Hazel Highfill Scholarship, in care of NWOSU Alumni Office, 709 Oklahoma Boulevard, Alva, Okla. 73717.
Casket bearers will be Joe Highfill, Jim Highfill, Lance Highfill, Matt Highfill, Wade Sessom, and Bill Grayson.
The family will be at 1781 North Longwood Road, Ponca City, Okla. 74604.
