Enlisted at age 17 in June 1945, following his father and two older brothers into the US Marine Corps. Served at the end of World War II in the American Theater and was honorably discharged on 30 September 1946.
Charlie obtained his pilot's license on 22 July 1947 in Springfield, Missouri. In July 1948 he moved to Junction City, Kansas where he met Darlene.
Re-enlisted at Omaha, Nebraska in August 1950 and shipped out from San Diego for Korea on 1 September. He was part of the Inch'on landing and fought in the Chosin Reservoir battle, returning to San Francicsco, California on 26 September 1951. He served continuously until retirement.
His Military Occupational Specialty was Aerial Navigator, serving at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro from 1955 to 1964 and at Marine Corps Base Quantico until his second deployment during the Vietnam War (1968-1969 and 1972-1973). He retired at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in June 1973.
On 23 October 1951, Charlie married Ethel Darlene Peck at the First Presbyterian Church in Junction City, Kansas. Their only child, Cinde Ann, was born to them at Corona Naval Hospital, Corona, Riverside, California, in 1956.
In addition to his passion for flying, Charlie was a champion skeet and trap shooter. While stationed at Quantico, he had a standing Saturday morning golf game with the Commanding General.
