He was the son of John Albert Brown and Dovie Palestine Chastain. He married Viola Jones on 14 March 1942 in Graham, Texas. He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1978. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Olney.

At time of death he was survived by his wife, Viola; one step-daughter, Betty Schultz; three sisters, Ethel Mote, Adele Jeffreys and Ina Mae Scott.

NOTE: At birth he was named John Albert Brown, JR. As he grew older, because of confusion caused by the same name and initials as his father, he changed his name to Albert John. I don't know if this was officially changed or not, but the headstone certainly indicates the name he was known by. Minnesota Death Index shows his name as Albert John Brown.
