The first born of five daughters to John S. Boal and Ann Almeda Foster, Nettie married Jerome Harvey Darling in Oasis, Johnson County, Iowa, near where her grandfather, William Boal, had lived.¹

Her great grandfather, James, was born in Ireland in 1764 and came to America from County Derry in Northern Ireland in 1790. He settled in Centre County, Pennsylvania, home to many cousins with the name Boal.

They were Presbyterians, probably immigrants from Scotland encouraged by the English to settle in Ireland. Presbyterians in Ulster — Northern Ireland — owned land and businesses but could not vote and had no political power.

1. Oasis is to the northwest of West Branch, hometown and final resting place of Herbert Hoover.
