Ernesto Gonsalves de Aguiar "Papa" Geer (Ernest Geer, Sr. was his American name with Aguiar being the Portuguese family name) was born in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal on April 24, 1890. His father was João Gonçalves de Aguiar (from Rua, do, Socorro, Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal) and his mother's name was Maria Amélia de Nóbrega (from British Guiana in South America; now known simply as Guyana). His paternal grandparents were João Gonçalves de Aguiar (Senior) and Vitorina Lucrécia Aguiar (her maiden name is not known at this time.) His maternal grandparents were Manuel de Nóbrega and Joaquina de Jesus, maybe from British Guiana.

He immigrated to the United States in 1909 at the age of 19. He very quickly learned to read, write, and speak English and adapted to the American way of life. He proudly served the United States of America in the Coast Guard.

He was married to Mary Cecelia (Silva) Geer of New London, CT. She was the daughter of Joseph and Helena (Enos) Silva of Portugal.

Together they had 6 children, 4 daughters: Dorothy (1915-1993), Ethel (1918-1994), Ruth (1923-2010) Marjorie (1929-2005), and and 2 sons: Ernest Joseph Geer, Jr (1920-2014) and Norman F. Geer (1931-1995)
