Eldon A. Bonifas, 75, of 3407 Waller Street, Dubuque, died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a year long battle with lung cancer.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 30, at Resurrection Catholic Church, with Fr. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at The Hoffmann-Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary Service at 7:15 p.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. Scripture Service.
Eldon was born Jan. 9, 1932 on a farm near Zwingle, Iowa, the son of Henry and Rosa (Haxmeier) Bonifas. He graduated in 1951 from Holy Rosary High School in La Motte, IA. After graduation Eldon was employed for two years at Caradco, then served two years with the 5th Armored Division of the U.S. Army. He then returned to Caradco. He was later employed by John Deere Dubuque Works until retirement in Feb. of 1992. On June 20, 1959, he married Verna Kronlage at St. Joseph's Church in Farley, IA.
Eldon was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Notre Dame Council 4236 of La Motte, Iowa. He was also a member of the UAW Local 94. He was a member of Resurrection Parish for 43 years, serving as Extraordinary Minister.
His favorite past time was woodworking, he made many gifts for family and friends. He also enjoyed bird watching, especially wrens.
He devoted his life to his wife, children, grandchildren and his faith, attending mass every morning. He was always willing to give his time helping others. He is survived by his wife, Verna and six children, Mary Jo Dalsing, Joyce Bonifas, Mark (Lois Wessels) Bonifas all of Dubuque, Lori (Frank) Lahey, Amy (Darren) Kapparos both of Sherrill, and Lisa Bonifas of West Des Moines; a brother Sylvester Bonifas of Dubuque; two sisters Alverda Clasen of Bellevue and Mary Ehlinger of La Motte; one sister-in-law Leila (Bert) Stierman of Dickeyville, WI; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Samantha and Rebecca Lahey, Seth, Lee, and James Bonifas, Rosa, Noah, and Joshua Kapparos.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Roman; two sisters, Bernice Westemeier and Sister Myra Bonifas O.S.F; three brothers-in-law, Ed Westemeier, Vincent Clasen, and Loren Ehlinger; one sister-in-law Marcella Bonifas, two brothers in infancy, George and John.
