Note: I do not understand why a flag has been placed by the gravestone of Pardon. The very thorough genealogy of the Tillinghast family published by Wayne G. Tillinghast in 2006 does not mention that Pardon had any military service of any kind. There were two different French and Indian Wars in which Pardon might have served: King William's War and Queen Anne's War, but I find no record of his service in either. The Pardon Tillinghast who served in Col. Hopkin's regiment was of a later generation, and served in 1756 during THE French and Indian War (1756-1763).

Pardon was the son of Pardon Tillinghast and Lydia Tabor of Providence, Rhode Island. He was married first about 1688 to Mary KEECH, the daughter of George and Mary Keech of Newport and East Greenwich, RI. He was married second on 28 April 1728 to Sarah (REYNOLDS) Ayres, the daughter of John Reynolds and Sarah Ayres of N. Kingstown, RI, and the widow of Thomas Ayres.

Pardon moved from Providence to E. Greenwich in 1699. He served as a deputy from EG from 1702 to 1712, and for several of the years from 1714 to 1728. He was also a justice of the peace from 1705 to 1719 and again from 1725 to 1730. Pardon was a yeoman, but prospered through land speculation and investment. His will named and identified all of his children and grandchildren, and his iventory amounted to more than 3000 pounds, livestock, tools and two Negro men.

Pardon had five named children, all with his first wife, the first three of whom were born in Providence, and the last two in E. Greenwich. He also had another son, as yet unidentified, whose birth date has not been determined. Children:

*John, b. 1691, m. (1) Anne Greene; (2) Phebe Greene; (3) Ann (Allin) Brown; and (4) Abigail (Brown) Thomas

*Mary, b. ca 1693, m. Peter Mawney

*Joseph, b. c. 1698, m. (1) Margaret _______[perhaps Taber]; and (2) Herodias _______

*Mercy, b. 1706, m. (1) Peter Mawney, widower of her older sister and (2) James Brown

*Philip, b. 5 Nov 1707; m. (1) Alice Thomas and (2) Judith Ayrault

*son, d. 10 Feb 1726/7 at E. Greenwich (partially destroyed record); no age given; it is possible his name was Pardon.
