Thomas Hatch Davis
Birth: Jul. 23, 1835
Camden County
New Jersey, USA
Death: May 12, 1864
Spotsylvania County
Virginia, USA

Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Major, then Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 12th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He served with the regiment from its very beginnings in July 1862 until the Spring of 1863, when he fell severely ill. He missed the 12th New Jersey's combat in the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, where, under other officers, it participated in the attacks on the Bliss Farm and the repulse of Pickett's Charge. He assumed command upon his recovery, and led it in the Battle of Bristoe Station, and the Mine Run Campaign. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness (May 5, 1864), but returned to command at the Battle of Spotsylvania. In that Battle he was at the head of the 12th New Jersey when it took part in General Hancock's II Corps attack. The 12th New Jersey had cleared the first line of Confederate defenses, and had come upon a stronger second line. Lt. Col. Davis charged this second line, and was instantly killed. His body was first buried where he fell, then was removed to Fredericksburg. In November 1865 he was brought back to Philadelphia by his family. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
